One of my favorite items in my closet is my denim jacket. I love it because it keeps things casual but can dress up post-workout when I need to look a bit more polished. And of course, it has rescued me from the freezing air in cold restaurants, airplanes, cool summer nights and movie theaters. The best trait of a denim jacket is that it is low maintenance: it doesn’t cost much, it doesn’t wrinkle, no hanger is necessary and you definitely don’t need to dry clean it. Trends in jean jackets this spring and summer have many variations, so take your pick and express your style.
Women over 40, this look can be classy, so don’t be afraid of looking like you are trying to go back to middle school (minus the drama!). I’ve got great tips to keep it all in check. If this hasn’t convinced you that it’s a worthy investment, just check out your latest fashion magazine and look at the celebrities. I’ll show you how to create two very different looks with a jean jacket. With a bit of planning, you can go from daytime dress to night on the town with a few small changes. I’ll also give you tips on styling denim-on-denim, which is the hot trend spring.
Most of the time we think of dressing down when we bust out the jean jacket, but often I sport this denim over my workout attire when I need some added warmth. Not only does it keep me warm, it manages to add a bit more style to my workout clothes. Plus, I can run my errands and not look like I just left the studio. I paired this jean jacket with my SQN – Sport Sleeveless Popover. Check out my article Wear Your Clothes All Day with Double Duty Workout Wear in a previous article.
On the Go Dressing
For a daytime look, I styled my LBD with a jean jacket, backpack and some cool slip-on Adidas shoes. I could stash those in my backpack when it’s time to hit the town. This outfit is perfect for those that travel a lot and need to pack efficiently. There is no need to go home and change. You can switch up your look in minutes!
Day Time Dress to Night on the Town
It’s hard to believe this dress can be styled to look casual, but check out the look with a jean jacket and some ankle booties. This get-up can go from daytime street style to date night very quickly. Be sure to take a peek at previous article about how to wear booties and I’ve got tips on how to wear them with dresses.
It’s spring but it’s still cold, so I styled my denim jacket with denim jeans. This outfit says spring with the bright cashmere sweater but I’m warm with the denim and it’s on trend. Note the wash is different in the jacket than on the jeans.
Tips On Wearing Denim
- If you are wearing denim-on-denim, DON’T wear the same wash in the denim
- Although western-inspired boots are “in style”, stay away from full-on western boots with your denim-on-denim. It will look like a costume.
- Dress up your denim-on-denim. Think high heel pumps, red lipstick and a fancy clutch. Your denim can look classy!
- No accessories in denim!
- Remember that the 80’s style denim with the celebrities was TRAGIC ! Don’t repeat!
My Picks For Denim Jackets
If you don’t own a denim jean jacket, buy one! If you do own a denim jacket, choose one with a fun variation or buy a white one. A denim jacket is always classic but the trendy world is shining brightly on this one right now. Many of the items I am wearing are on sale and selling out quickly. Availability may be low. Check out all my picks so you can have options as I added additional items that are similar.
