Right now, it’s still cold and sometimes a little gloomy, but spring is on the horizon. As the weather is turning warmer, you can get ready for some fun trends this season. Even if you’re a “classic gal”, you’ll want to embrace some of the latest looks. As I’ve mentioned before, adding trendy pieces to a classic outfit and vice versa make it more interesting. Plus, if your classics are becoming dated, you can get longevity out of them if you mix them with trendy pieces. Some of the latest looks are throwbacks to the 80s, but they have their own modern twist.
One rule of thumb when the new trends arrive is knowing they will not all suit your style. What is in fashion is not necessarily your style. Choose what works for you and what makes you feel beautiful. Have fun with it! Now get those “Dad” shoes on and get going on your wish list for spring! And be sure to check out my tips on how to mix patterns as it’s a new “thing” this season.
Here are the fun trends to watch for this spring:
White sneakers are a safe bet, but over-the-top embellished sneakers are also making a comeback. And you don’t have to limit them to athletic attire. Throw them on with a skirt or dress and you’ll be on trend. Check out my piece on How to Refresh Your Little Black Dress to see how to add them to a dress. If you like white, it is definitely hot this season, or choose something loud and outlandish!
You’ll notice plastic in purses, shoes and even hats this season. Check out the lucite heel on this black beauty.
Trench coats are classic wardrobe pieces and I highly recommend investing in a classic trench which will last you years. If you already have a trench coat, buy another one in a bright color just for fun, especially since the trench is having its day in the sun. Right now the trench coat is a hybrid of sorts. It’s definitely a classic but is having it’s heyday in the trendy world too. Take your pick!
Circle Bags/Belt Bags
Circle bags are all the rage this spring. And this one by Topshop won’t break the bank. Since it’s a trend, I usually don’t spend as much on these items as classics. There are plenty to choose from this season so suit yourself. If the circle bag isn’t your thing, how about a Belt Bag a/k/a – fanny pack. Remember these from the 80s? Of course, they look a lot more upscale and polished than the touristy ones of yesteryear. Seriously, now you can wear them with dresses and skirts!
Asymmetrical Pieces and Western Influenced Booties
Anything asymmetrical is making a statement this season. You’ll see it in tops, skirts and dresses. Check out the hemline of this dress and note the white western styled booties. They are going to be the heat this season. And although this outfit is not two pieces, it does involve mixing of prints which is BIG right now.
Mixing prints is the “new thing” this season. If that sounds scary, you are not alone. Check out my tips on how to mix patterns!
1.Choose one print to be an accent and the other to be the showstopper
2. Keep prints in the same color scheme
3. Choose one color to be consistent in both prints
4. Do a large print on top and same print on the bottom, only smaller
5. Play with size such as tiny polka dots and then large stripes
6. Break up the patterns with a belt
7. Think of stripes as a neutral
8. Add in some solids
- High Waisted Pants
- Wide Pants
- Pastels or bright colors
- Anything with fringe
- Polka dots and florals
I am super excited about the trends this spring. They bring back memories of the 80s but seem more wearable and flattering this time around. Remember to choose what you love and to have fun with it. If you are a classic gal you can stay true to yourself and your style even if you work in a few trendy pieces. And if you are a trendy girl, you have lots to choose from this season!
